Its now illegal to set a glue trap in New South Wales! The new rules came into effect over the weekend with the updated Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulation 2025.

Glue traps are indiscriminate killers, designed to ensnare any small animal who wanders across or lands on them. Once stuck on the trap, birds, mice, lizards, frogs and other small animals slowly die of dehydration, fatigue, starvation, asphyxiation, exposure, or blood loss from injury, as they tear their own wings and limbs struggling to escape.

Consumers are generally directed to throw trapped but living animals into the bin along with the trap, leaving them to suffer for days until they die Rodents and other animals who become trapped endure agony during the days that it can take for them to die, and many animals will even chew through their own legs in an effort to break free. Sometimes, their faces get stuck in the glue and they suffocate, which can take hours.

Glue traps one of the cruelest ways to kill an animal. One scientific analysis of rodent-control methods concluded that glue traps are one of the most barbaric options.

The change comes about as an amendment suggested by the Animal Justice Party and others, and as Australians across the country are increasingly concerned about animals. The cruel traps are also banned in the ACT, Tasmania, and Victoria.

Over the years, PETA has successfully lobbied many retailers – including discount stores Cheap as Chips and Ten Tops, alongside hardware chain Mitre 10—to join Kmart, Big W, and Target Australia – in ending sales of glue traps. But, despite the suffering that these devices clearly cause countless animals, some retailers continue to sell them.

If you discover that your local supermarket or hardware shop is selling them or that a business or property manager is using them, please speak up. You can inform the people involved about the extreme cruelty these traps cause and urge them to stop selling or using them.
